The timing chain is located at the front of the engine and is mounted on two sprockets – on the crankshaft and on the camshaft. The timing chain transmits the rotary motion of the crankshaft to the camshaft, which ensures that the valves open and close at the right time.

A chain tensioner and sliding rails are located between the sprockets to ensure that the timing chain runs tightly and precisely. They prevent the chain from skipping by applying light pressure on it.

It is recommended that you never replace only the timing chain. Adjacent components such as chain tensioners, rails and wheels should always be replaced too. Make sure that you use the same type of timing chain when you replace it. In addition, you should always maintain a clean work environment to avoid any contaminants getting into the engine. It is furthermore important that the crankshaft and the camshaft do not twist against each other when you fit them. The chain should be adjusted to the optimal position and tension in order to minimise wear as much as possible.
