Expansion Tanks
suitable for: Iveco, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Volvo etc.
When the coolant heats up, it expands. To prevent the hoses between the radiator and engine from being overloaded, the displaced coolant is absorbed by the expansion tank and ensures that the cooling system functions optimally. The resulting overpressure is relieved by the integrated equalising valve. As soon as the coolant temperature is at operating temperature, a slight vacuum is created in the cooling system. Thanks to the equalising valve, the pressure can be regulated in the system by releasing peak pressures into the atmosphere. This prevents damage to the cooling system, e.g. overloading of hoses, tanks and seals.

If coolant needs to be refilled, it is important to ensure that the radiator and the engine cool down completely before opening the cap. “As there is overpressure in the expansion tank, premature opening can cause hot vapours to escape, which can lead to serious burns”, explains Niklas. “If white deposits can be seen on the cooling system or connected components, this is an indication that coolant is leaking”, points out the PS professional. The drained antifreeze can be refilled into the new expansion tank if no deposits are visible and the coolant level is sufficient. Antifreeze has several functions in this context. Firstly, it prevents freezing at low temperatures and secondly, it lubricates the internal components and protects them from corrosion. Corrosion developing in the radiator acts like “liquid sandpaper”, damages sealing components and leads to constrictions/blockages in the cooling system.
Once installation and refilling are complete, a pressure leak test is carried out using a hand pump or a compressed air connection. Internal and external leaks can be the result of a damaged radiator, compressor or cylinder head gasket, for example. “If coolant and engine oil are mixed, milky deposits appear”, Niklas demonstrates in the video. As a result, ducts in the system become clogged or the lubricating film in the oil circuit breaks off, causing serious engine damage.
