The propeller-shaft is used to transmit the drive torque from the gearbox to the axle drive. The length of the drive shaft depends on the wheelbase of the vehicle. It consists of a metal shaft which transfers the drive torque and engine speed and compensates for length variations through spring movements of the vehicle.

With the help of the joint cross, the drive shaft can rotate in any angle position which is determined by the movement between the transmission and the rear axle. A diffraction angle of up to 25° is possible. The joint cross consists of a steel cross which runs in needle bearings between the drive shaft and the connecting flange bracket.

A distinction is made between maintenance-free and nonmaintenance-free joint crosses. Non-maintenance-free joint crosses have standardised grease nipples for lubrication when required.


The body of the joint crosses is made of forged steel. The contact surfaces, the so-called cones, are hardened and ground to ensure an optimal sit of the bushings. Inside the bushing, a roller bearing can be found. This is also hardened and ground.
